In this website you'll be able to find all the necessary information to participate in one of the best sport fishing events in all the Mexican Caribbean. This year edition we're offering a total of $1,000,000 pesos total value in several great prizes. This amount is 30% bigger than last year tournament edition. The prizes we're offering for this year are: 1 Camioneta Dodge Jouney 2010, 1 Camioneta Chevrolet Silverado 2010, 1 auto Atos 2010, 1 Lancha W-25, 1 Motor fuera de borda y  5 motos.

   HISTORIA DE DON COSME Y EL TORNEO DE ISLA MUJERES

El señor Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña, nació en Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo el 27 de septiembre de 1942. Sus padres fueron el Sr. Mariano Martínez Sabido(+) y la Sra. Lucrecia Magaña Carrillo(+), originarios también de Isla Mujeres, el primero se desempeñaba como pescador de tortuga y al cultivo de la copra proveniente de un rancho de cocales que tenían en Cancún y la Sra. Lucrecia se dedicaba al hogar.

 

Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña tuvo una infancia llena de alegría y juegos, a pesar de que a su corta edad de 8 años empezó sus inicios como pescador a lado de su padre. Durante toda su vida se desempeño como pescador, ya que desde muy joven descubrió lo apasionante que es esta actividad. A la edad de 22 años contrajo matrimonio con la Srita. Flor Elena Alvarado Gómez, de este matrimonio nacieron 2 niños: Martín Alberto y Marco Antonio.

 

En ese entonces, la principal actividad económica en Isla Mujeres, era la pesca, aunque cabe mencionar que el turismo apenas comenzaba a llegar a la Isla y fue el Sr. Mariano Martínez uno de los pioneros de esta actividad, ofreciendo tours de pesca a los turistas de aquella época, principalmente aquellos provenientes de Yucatán. Don Cosme, obtuvo sus primeros conocimientos de pesca a través de su abuelo el Sr. Ignacio Martínez y de su papá el Sr. Mariano Martínez.

 

A la edad de 22 años, Cosme Alberto ya contaba con su primer barco que le servía para pescar tortuga y tiburón, el Neptuno, construido por el Sr. Alba Burgos Sabido, el cual utilizo madera para la construcción del mismo, dicha embarcación contaba con 30 pies de eslora y navegaba a pura vela, sin motor.

 

Don Cosme, fue también un pionero en la pesca del escribano en todo el país, precisamente para comercializarlo en el ámbito de la pesca deportiva, que ya era un nicho en pleno crecimiento entre el turismo que nos visitaba en aquella época.

 

Una de las experiencias más importantes en la vida del Sr. Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña fue precisamente la de haber obtenido uno de los primeros récords mundiales de pesca, ya que a media milla al noreste de Isla Mujeres, 10 minutos después de haber tirado su línea de cordel pesco un marlín azul de 3 metros con 45 centímetros y 900 libras de peso, utilizando para ello un anzuelo catalán y un cordel de 100m, el cual fue remolcado aproximadamente 11 millas, con una batalla espectacular de 5 horas de duración para lograr subirlo a su embarcación, el día de tal hazaña fue un 19 de Agosto de 1965, iba acompañado por su marinero el Sr. Aristeo Velázquez “el manchado”(+) y su cuñado el Sr. Antonio Alvarado.

 

El 13 de Marzo del 2003 en la Ciudad de Mérida, Yucatán a la edad de 60 años falleció el Sr. Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña, dejando la semilla para convertir a Isla Mujeres en uno de los mejores lugares para la práctica de la pesca deportiva del Caribe Mexicano.

 

Es por ello, que en el año 2004 se instituyó el 1er Gran Torneo de Pesca de Pesca de Isla Mujeres que lleva su nombre “Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña”, del cual celebramos ahora la 6ª edición.

 

 

THE HISTORY OF DON COSME AND THE TOURNAMENT OF

 ISLA MUJERES

Mr. Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña was born in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo on September 27, 1942. His parents were Mr. Mariano Martínez Sabido and Mrs. Lucrecia Magaña Carrillo, also originally from Isla Mujeres. Mr. Mariano Martínez Sabido worked as a turtle fisherman and harvesting coconuts on a farm they had Cancún.  Mrs. Lucrecia was a homemaker.

 

Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña had a happy childhood, and in spite of being just eight years old he began as a fisherman alongside his father. During his whole life he was a fisherman, discovering this passion when he was very young. At 22 years old he joined in marriage with Miss Flor Elena Alvarado Gómez, from this marriage two sons were born: Martín Alberto y Marco Antonio.

 

In this time the principal economic activity in Isla Mujeres was fishing.  Although it is worth mentioning that tourism had hardly begun to take off in Isla and Mr. Mariano Martínez was one of the pioneers of this activity, offering fishing tours to  tourists at that period, principally those who came from Yucatán. Don Cosme obtained his first knowledge of fishing through his grandfather Mr. Ignacio Martínez and his father Mr. Mariano Martínez.

 

At the age of 22, Cosme Alberto had already obtained his first boat, the Neptune, that served for fishing turtles and shark.  The boat was constructed by Mr. Alba Burgos Sabido, of which he used wood for the construction; the vessel was 30 feet long and was navigated purely by sail, without a motor.

 

Don Cosme was also a pioneer of fishing garfish in the entire country, principally for the scope of commercialization of sport fishing, which was a growing industry among the tourists visiting at that time.

 

One of the most important experiences in the life of Mr. Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña was to have obtained one of the first world records for fishing.  He was half a mile northeast of Isla Mujeres, and 10 minutes after put his line in he had a Blue Marlin measuring three meters and 45 centimeters and weighing in at 900 pounds. He had used a catalán hook y a line of 100m, of which he towed for approximately 11 miles.  After a spectacular battle of five hours he managed to get the fish in the vessel. The day of that exploit was August 19, 1965 and he was accompanied by sailor Mr. Aristeo Velázquez “el manchado” and his brother in law, Mr. Antonio Alvarado.

 

On March 13, 2003 in the city of Mérida, Yucatán at the age 60, Mr. Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña died, planting the seed to convert Isla Mujeres into one of the best places to practice sports fishing in the Mexican Caribbean.

 

                It is for all of this that in 2004, the Premier Grand Fishing Tournament of Isla Mujeres
            took the name “Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña”, of which we are now celebrating
            the 6^th edition.
